Mrs. Donna Andrews’s KES gifted 4th graders recently visited the Tidelands at Jekyll Island. During their field trip, students explored the salt marshes, sampled sea pickles, and caught fiddler crabs and even coaxed snails out of their shells by humming. They gained a deeper appreciation for the barrier islands, which serve as vital shields for the mainland by absorbing storm energy.
Afterwards, they created a STEM water filters from various materials. Although they couldn’t taste the potable water, many students succeeded in transforming dirty water into clear, clean water. The project was a hit, leaving the young learners inspired and enthusiastic!

🧁 SMES First Graders are "Cooking Up" a Love for Reading!
To wrap up an incredible Read Across America Week, SMES classrooms transformed into a "Book Bakery!" Their little chefs spent the day "tasting" different genres. After finding their favorite "flavors" of stories, students got creative and illustrated their top picks on special cupcakes! It was the perfect recipe for a day of learning and fun. 👩🍳

🧠✨ Did you know that cursive handwriting can boost brain development and memory? 4th and 5th graders at Crooked River Elementary are taking their handwriting skills to the next level this school year with the Handwriting Club. Twice a month, students gather to perfect their penmanship and cursive letters, and even learn how to sign their own signature! Mrs. Blalock, our dedicated club sponsor, leads engaging activities like tic-tac-toe games and tracing exercises to make learning fun.

Mrs. Boily's WIN Robotics class at SMMS traveled to compete with seven Jacksonville high school engineering groups at the Society of American Military Engineers' (SAME) Engineering Career Day. They were given two surprise engineering challenges to complete build and test. Their builds were judged in several different areas to ensure guidelines were followed, and that they could complete the test. Colleges and engineering firms from the area provide students with information on a variety of engineering career options. Although the students didn't win any awards, the students out performed several teams. It was a wonderful learning experience for all involved.

Mrs. Holloway’s 3rd graders ay SMES have been busy putting their scientific minds to work with two incredible experiments this week!
🔬 Activity 1: The Great Ice Melt Challenge
Students turned into engineers to see how sunlight affects ice. Using Dixie cups and a mix of aluminum foil, cardstock, and paper, they designed custom instruments to either speed up or slow down the melting process.
The Goal: Test how different materials insulate or reflect heat.
The Process: Groups formed hypotheses, built their designs, and recorded how long it took for the "thaw" to happen!
🌡️ Activity 2: Mapping Temperatures
Next, the class explored how location changes the environment by measuring water temperatures in five different spots: full sun, full shade, the fridge, the classroom, and a dark closet.
The Math Connection: After gathering data with thermometers, students practiced recording temperatures in both Fahrenheit and Celsius.
Data Visualization: To wrap it up, they translated their findings into detailed bar graphs to compare the results at a glance.
It’s been a week of great collaboration, critical thinking, and—most importantly—fun!
