SMES 5th Graders Tackle the Rock Cycle
In an exciting preview of 6th-grade Science, Mrs. Bean and Ms. Koch’s 5th graders accelerated their learning by diving deep into the rock cycle. To visualize these complex geologic processes, students didn't just read about rocks—they became part of the formation process using Starburst candies as models.
From Candy to Crust
After drawing a simple rock cycle diagram, students used their treats to model three major transformations:
Sedimentary: Creating "sediments" and compacting them into layers.
Metamorphic: Using body heat and pressure to transform the candy's structure.
Igneous: Simulating the melting and cooling process.
By applying these hands-on geologic forces, our 5th graders gained a "sweet" head start on middle school science standards! 🌋🪨🔥

Students in 2nd grade at MLGES recently read the story "The Idea Jar" by Adam Lehrhaupt. The story is about a teacher's jar where story ideas are stored. Throughout the story, the ideas come to life creating chaos until they are combined into new creative ideas! After reading the story, students were able to use ideas from their own minds, or from Mrs. Mowbray's idea jar to create their own stories. The lesson also focused on different types of storytelling, including writing a story, speaking a story, and even drawing a story! The students showed off their creativity and imagination with this fun activity.

The impact Lisa Gleason, Director of CTAE, has made on Camden County Schools cannot be measured simply in numbers, although the numbers are certainly impressive.

Through her leadership, our CTAE program has grown into 40+ career pathways with nearly 100 course offerings, more than 2,400 student enrollments, and work-based learning partnerships with 80+ employers serving nearly 200 students.

But her true legacy is found in the students whose futures were changed because she believed in building a program where they could reach their potential and find meaningful opportunities to succeed.

Ms. Gleason’s dedication, vision, and heart for students have helped shape the future of Camden County Schools and our community in ways that will last for years to come.

Thank you for everything you have poured into our students, staff, and schools. We wish you the very best in this next chapter of life. Happy retirement!🩵

Mrs. Donna Andrews’s KES 3rd grade class put the Force to work during a hands-on STEM activity that had science and imagination orbiting together. Using classroom straws and ping-pong balls, students explored the airflow effect that makes a lightweight ball hover — a real-world demonstration of Bernoulli’s Principle. When air is blown through the straw, faster-moving air around the ball lowers pressure and lets it float, much like a tiny training droid suspended on a cushion of air.
Next, students teamed up with their Princess Leia or Luke Skywalker figures to engineer brand-new Rebel bases. Working with everyday classroom materials, each group designed a base with tactical features such as dual exits and a hidden compartment. As they sketched, built, tested, and revised their designs, learners documented each step of the engineering design process and reflected on what worked, what didn’t, and how to improve their defenses against the Empire.
The classroom buzzed with strategy, creativity, and scientific inquiry — proof that a little imagination (and a bit of physics) can make the Force feel very real. May the Fourth be with you!
