Mrs. Hastert’s 5th Grade Shark Time students at SMES are officially "Accidental Archaeologists!" After finishing Sarah Albee’s book, they got their hands dirty in dig kits that let them travel through the Proterozoic, Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic Eras.
Our young scientists uncovered authentic treasures including seaweed, trilobites, dinosaur skulls, and even Smilodon teeth! Check out these future paleontologists in the making!

Math came to life in Mrs. Reiber’s 2nd grade classroom at SMES as students ran their own restaurant, The Shark Tank! From designing menus to placing orders and making change from a $100 bill, students practiced real-world math skills through hands-on learning.
With lots of smiles and “Best math day ever!” moments, students worked on addition, subtraction, mental math, and place value—all while having a blast. Hands-on learning makes math meaningful… and a little hungry too!

✨ Teacher of the Year Spotlight ✨
Crooked River Elementary School Teacher of the Year
This week, we are proud to celebrate M.J. Hyten, Crooked River Elementary’s Teacher of the Year! M.J. is a 4th grade Math and Science teacher with 7 years in education. She became a teacher after being inspired by many great educators and because teaching allows her to be creative while making learning engaging and meaningful for students.
M.J. finds the greatest joy in helping students learn to love math. Having struggled with math herself as a student, she is passionate about helping children see its value and approach learning with confidence.
When she’s not in the classroom, M.J. loves fishing, beachcombing, running, sewing, and crocheting. If she weren’t a teacher, she’d be an interior designer, creating comfortable and beautiful spaces.
Her motto, “Enjoy being in the process of becoming,” reflects the encouragement, patience, and growth mindset she brings to her students every day.
